The Main Library is the nucleus of The Library System. The original South Building, designed by Tachau and Pilcher Architects of New York City, was constructed in 1906 with support from philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. The contemporary North Building, designed by Lewis and Henry Architects of Louisville, was built in 1969 through a bond issue. The new building more than doubled the space in the Main Library. Over 400,000 people per year visit the Main Library.

DIRECTIONS:
The Main Library is located on York Street between 3rd and 4th streets, one block south of Broadway.
From I-65 southbound:
Take the Jefferson St. exit. Go west on Jefferson to 3rd Street. Turn left (south) onto 3rd and proceed to York. The library is located at the corner of 4th and York.
From I-65 northbound:
Take the S. Catherine St. exit. Turn left (west) on St. Catherine to 4th Street then turn right (north) on 4th to York.
From I-71 southbound or I-64 westbound:
Take the 3rd Street exit. Go south on 3rd to York.
From I-64 eastbound:
Take I-65 south to Jefferson Street. Go west on Jefferson to 3rd. Go left (south) on 3rd to York.
